    Can sacrificial feeding areas protect aquatic plants from herbivore grazing? Using behavioural ecology to inform wildlife management

    Effective wildlife management is needed for conservation, economic and human well-being objectives. However, traditional population control methods are frequently ineffective, unpopular with stakeholders, may affect non-target species, and can be both expensive and impractical to implement. New methods which address these issues and offer effective wildlife management are required. We used an individual-based model to predict the efficacy of a sacrificial feeding area in preventing grazing damage by mute swans (Cygnus olor) to adjacent river vegetation of high conservation and economic value. The accuracy of model predictions was assessed by a comparison with observed field data, whilst prediction robustness was evaluated using a sensitivity analysis. We used repeated simulations to evaluate how the efficacy of the sacrificial feeding area was regulated by (i) food quantity, (ii) food quality, and (iii) the functional response of the forager. Our model gave accurate predictions of aquatic plant biomass, carrying capacity, swan mortality, swan foraging effort, and river use. Our model predicted that increased sacrificial feeding area food quantity and quality would prevent the depletion of aquatic plant biomass by swans. When the functional response for vegetation in the sacrificial feeding area was increased, the food quantity and quality in the sacrificial feeding area required to protect adjacent aquatic plants were reduced. Our study demonstrates how the insights of behavioural ecology can be used to inform wildlife management. The principles that underpin our model predictions are likely to be valid across a range of different resource-consumer interactions, emphasising the generality of our approach to the evaluation of strategies for resolving wildlife management problems

    Evaluation of copper-64-ATSM for non invasive imaging of tumour hypoxia by positron emission

    MCu(II)-diacetyl-bis(A-methyl-thiosemicarbazone) (64Cu-ATSM) has been proposed as a positron emitting radiotracer to delineate tumour hypoxia using positron emission tomography (PET). In this study evaluation of this radiotracer was carried out in the P22 carcinosarcoma BD-9 rat tumour model. The distribution of 64Cu-ATSM with the immunohistochemical marker of hypoxia, pimonidazole, was compared using autoradiography and pimonidazole staining at early (1 hour) and late (20.5 hours) time-points after tracer injection however no correlation was found. The impact of tumour blood flow in determining tumour distribution of 64Cu-ATSM Gadolinium- enhanced MRI scanning was investigated. This showed a correlation between 64Cu- ATSM and blood flow up to twenty minutes after the administration of 64Cu-ATSM, an association beyond this time-point was not seen. A further study examined the effect of increased tumour hypoxia on uptake and retention of 64Cu-ATSM using the vascular disrupting agent combretastatin A4 phosphate (CA4P). No correlation between 64Cu-ATSM uptake and retention and hypoxia was seen in the tumours administered 64Cu-ATSM after CA4P administration, however a negative correlation between 64Cu-ATSM uptake and hypoxia was seen in the tumours receiving 64Cu-ATSM 10 minutes prior to CA4P administration. This strong negative association is likely to reflect the distribution of 64Cu-ATSM fixed at the time of administration of the vascular disrupting agent CA4P preventing its movement elsewhere in the tumour. In this tumour model 64Cu-ATSM distribution reflects tumour blood flow for twenty minutes after its administration. As such, fixation of the distribution of 64Cu-ATSM 10 minutes post-injection is likely to reflect tumour blood flow, explaining the negative association between 64Cu-ATSM and hypoxia observed in this part of the study.     Partitioning of Co2+ and Mn2+ into meridianiite (MgSO4·11H2O): Ternary solubility diagrams at 270 K; cation site distribution determined by single-crystal time-of-flight neutron diffraction and density functional theory

Available from Elsevier via the DOI in this record.We have grown single crystals of M 2+ SO 4 hydrates at 270 K from aqueous solutions in the ternary systems CoSO 4 –MgSO 4 –H 2 O and MnSO 4 –MgSO 4 –H 2 O. These systems exhibit broad stability fields for a triclinic undecahydrate on the Mg-rich side (i.e., Co- or Mn-bearing meridianiite solid solutions) and stability fields for monoclinic heptahydrates on the Mg-poor side (i.e., Mg-bearing solid solutions of bieberite or mallardite). The solubility curves and distribution coefficients, describing the partitioning of M 2+ ions between liquid and solid phases, have been determined by thermo-gravimetric and spectroscopic techniques. A subset of M 2+ SO 4 ·11H 2 O specimens were selected for single-crystal time-of-flight neutron diffraction analysis in order to evaluate preferential occupancy of symmetry-inequivalent coordination polyhedra in the structure.     High-Temperature Transport Properties of Yb4−xSmxSb3

    Polycrystalline L4Sb3 (L = La, Ce, Sm, and Yb) and Yb4−x Sm x Sb3, which crystallizes in the anti-Th3P4 structure type (I-43d no. 220), were synthesized via high-temperature reaction. Structural and chemical characterization were performed by x-ray diffraction and electronic microscopy with energy-dispersive x-ray analysis. Pucks were densified by spark plasma sintering. Transport property measurements showed that these compounds are n-type with low Seebeck coefficients, except for Yb4Sb3, which shows semimetallic behavior with hole conduction above 523 K. By partially substituting Yb by a trivalent rare earth we successfully improved the thermoelectric figure of merit of Yb4Sb3 up to 0.7 at 1273 K

    Water velocity limits the temporal extent of herbivore effects on aquatic plants in a lowland river

    The role of herbivores in regulating aquatic plant dynamics has received growing recognition from researchers and managers. However, the evidence for herbivore impacts on aquatic plants is largely based on short-term exclosure studies conducted within a single plant growing season. Thus, it is unclear how long herbivore impacts on aquatic plant abundance can persist for. We addressed this knowledge gap by testing whether mute swan (Cygnus olor) grazing on lowland river macrophytes could be detected in the following growing season. Furthermore, we investigated the role of seasonal changes in water current speed in limiting the temporal extent of grazing. We found no relationship between swan biomass density in 1 year and aquatic plant cover or biomass in the following spring. No such carry-over effects were detected despite observing high swan biomass densities in the previous year from which we inferred grazing impacts on macrophytes. Seasonal increases in water velocity were associated with reduced grazing pressure as swans abandoned river habitat. Furthermore, our study highlights the role of seasonal changes in water velocity in determining the length of the mute swan grazing season in shallow lowland rivers and thus in limiting the temporal extent of herbivore impacts on aquatic plant abundance

    Rich interaction and feedback supported mammographic training: A trial of an augmented reality approach

    The conventional ‘keyboard and workstation’ approach allows complex medical image presentation and manipulation during mammographic interpretation. Nevertheless, providing rich interaction and feedback in real time for navigational training or computer assisted detection of disease remains a challenge. Through computer vision and state of the art AR (Augmented Reality) technique, this study proposes an ‘AR mammographic workstation’ approach which could support workstation-independent rich interaction and real-time feedback. This flexible AR approach explores the feasibility of facilitating various mammographic training scenes via AR as well as its limitations

    Loss to follow-up in a community clinic in South Africa – roles of gender, pregnancy and CD4 count

    Background. Faith-based organisations have expanded antiretroviral therapy (ART) in community clinics across South Africa. Loss to follow-up (LTFU), however, limits the potential individual and population treatment benefits and optimal care. Objective. To identify patient characteristics associated with LTFU 6 months after starting ART in a large community clinic. Methods. Patients initiating ART between April 2004 and October 2006 in one South African Catholic Bishops’ Conference HIV treatment clinic who had at least one follow-up visit were included and routinely monitored every 6 months after ART initiation. Standardised instruments were used to collect data. Rates of LTFU over time were estimated by the Kaplan-Meier method. The Cox proportional hazard regression examined the impact of age, baseline CD4 count, baseline HIV RNA, gender and pregnancy status on LTFU. Results. Data from 925 patients (age >14 years, median age 36 years, 70% female, of whom 16% were pregnant) were included: 51 (6%) were lost to follow-up 6 months after ART initiation. Younger age (≤30 years) (hazard ratio (HR) 2.14, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.05 - 4.38) and pregnancy for women (HR 3.75, 95% CI 1.53 - 9.16) were significantly associated with higher LTFU rates. When stratified by baseline CD4 count, gender and pregnancy status, pregnant women with lower baseline CD4 counts (≤200 cells/ μl) had 6.06 times the hazard (95% CI 2.20 - 16.71) of LTFU at 6 months compared with men. Conclusions. HIV-infected pregnant women initiating ART were significantly more likely to be lost to follow-up in a community clinic in South Africa.
